Why Your Scene Looks Fake

(And How to Fix It in 1 Move)

When creating realistic scenes, accuracy isn’t just nice, it’s actually essential. The fastest way to get it right?
💡 Cast authentically.

Actors with lived experience bring insights research can’t always cover. On a recent shoot, I was cast as a clarinet player and student. In one scene, production set a chair on stage for a recital. But here’s the thing—clarinetists typically perform recitals standing. Because I’d played in recitals, as well as symphonies, I caught the detail before cameras rolled.

This was a small fix that made the scene more believable and aligned with the story they wanted to tell.

Use this system for voiceover as well as
on-camera talent.

We all have these "past lives" we bring to the table, for example:

  • I personally lived on a peach orchard,

  • I've been a Newspaper editor,

  • Graphic Designer,

  • Pizza Delivery Driver,

  • even provide guest services for a privately owned estate,

  • and several other positions!

Try it on your next casting call, let me know how it goes!

Hiring authentically:

  • Saves Time

  • Prevents Avoidable Mistakes

  • Elevates the Final Product
